When you want a quick and easy seasoning blend to use, reach for this in your spice cabinet.

House seasoning is a blend of simple ingredients that you already have in your pantry that add tons of flavor to your dish and you don’t have to measure out individual quantities.

Whether I’m roasting bone-in chicken breasts, seasonings some green beans for dinner, or looking to zhuzh up something before tossing it on the grill, my house seasoning is a simple and trusty blend that I can use to give it some delicious flavor.

Ingredients for house seasoning

  • Kosher salt: I prefer to and suggest using this specific salt. If you replace kosher salt with sea salt or even table salt, the quantity of salt to use will be different. If you swap the type of salt, please use your best judgement or a conversion chart so that your seasoning isn’t over or under salted!
  • Granulated Garlic: I like granulated garlic for this, but garlic powder works too.
  • Black Pepper: Freshly ground is the way to go if you have a choice!
  • Onion Powder: Use as much or little of this as you like. I typically add 2 tablespoons worth.
  • Umami Seasoning: This little ingredient is a work horse! It’s a blend of ingredients that adds complexity and boosts the meat-y flavor of any protein that you add them too. I typically buy this from Trader Joes but you can also get it here.

Why you’ll love this recipe!

  • Use 1½ teaspoons of this simple spice mix on a pound of chicken, beef, or salmon. I like to use a little less for shrimp.
  • You can totally make this your own or give it a little spice by adding smoked paprika or cayenne pepper. Feel free to use other spices too. I would do 2 teaspoons or cayenne and maybe 2 tablespoons of smoked paprika if you like plenty of color and spice!
  • If you like seasonings with more herbs, you can add dried oregano or thyme to this mix too. Start with 1 tablespoon dried oregano or thyme and work your way up from there until you’re happy!

Ingredients

  • ½ cup kosher salt
  • 3 tablespoons garlic powder (preferably granulated)
  • 2 tablespoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon umami seasoning

Instructions

  • COMBINE: In a medium bowl, combine the listed ingredients. Whisk or use a spoon to evenly distribute everything.
½ cup kosher salt, 3 tablespoons garlic powder, 2 tablespoon black pepper, 2 tablespoon onion powder, 1 tablespoon umami seasoning
  • STORE: in an airtight container for up to 6 months. The seasoning sometimes sticks together if you don't use an airtight container, simply break up any large clumps using a fork before using.
  • USE: For recipes, I like to use this as a 1:1 replace for regular salt and pepper in your favorite dishes. It works great when you need to season some chicken, steak, or shrimp!
