How many times a week do we need an easy side dish recipe to serve alongside roast chicken, grilled chicken or meat, other proteins, and pasta dishes?

If you’re like me, it’s most weeknights.

I’m always looking for a way to make vegetables taste more delicious but also keeping things simple for busy weeknights.

Enter this easy air fryer broccoli recipe. Making it in the air fryer means it takes a fraction of the time and no large baking sheet to clean afterwards.

I’ve made batches upon batches of this stuff.

And guess what? It’s amazing on salads because it bulks it up and adds fiber. Win win. Plus, my toddler loves it too.

To be fair, my toddler loves broccoli in any shape or form, but I have a feeling that your kids won’t say no to the seasoned crispy edges and the salty roasted veggies either.

Air Fryer Broccoli Ingredients

  • Fresh Broccoli Florets: Feel free to break down heads of broccoli or just purchase broccoli florets from the refrigerator section of your grocery store. Broccoli is a great source of fiber so I love including it in our regular veggie rotation.
  • Avocado Oil: Feel free to use any high heat cooking oil you typically use at home. We’re big on avocado oil, so that’s what I’ve used.
  • Umami Seasoning: this is my secret ingredient to the best air fryer or oven-roasted broccoli. Umami seasoning contains ingredients like dried mushrooms (think porcini, shiitake and others) along with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, nutritional yeast, and some times red pepper flakes. This simple seasoning mix has a little bit of everything!
  • Garlic herb seasoning: Feel free to use an all purpose garlic herb seasoning or my personal favorite, buttery garlic and herb seasoning. This seasoning contains garlic powder, sea salt, buttermilk powder, and a few other ingredients that give the air fryer broccoli plenty of flavor.
  • Red pepper flakes: yes, even though our umami seasoning contains some red pepper flakes, I like to up the spice level a little bit by adding another sprinkle. Feel free to leave this out if you’re making air fryer broccoli for kids who are senstive to spice.

Air-frying Broccoli

  1. Break it down. You’ll need 1-2 heads broccoli depending on how big they are. Wash, dry and break your broccoli heads down into florets. You’ll also want to preheat the air fryer for a 2-3 minutes while you season the broccoli.
  2. Toss with seasonings. Add the broccoli florets to a large bowl. Season with oil, umami seasoning, garlic herb seasoning, and red pepper flakes. Between the umami seasoning and garlic and herb, you shouldn’t need any more salt.
  3. Spread and roast. Spread the broccoli florets out in a single layer.
  4. Roast until crisp. Cook broccoli for 3-4 minutes, stop and shake the basket to loosen anything that might be stuck to the bottom of the air fryer basket. Continue to air fry the broccoli for another 3-4 minutes or until the outside is crisp and you have tender broccoli in the center. The cook time varies based on the size of the broccoli florets, so keep a close eye on them. Feel free to spritz with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice before serving if you’d like, we typically don’t.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • ½ teaspoon umami seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon garlic herb seasoning
  • ¼-½ teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • PREHEAT: Preheat the air fryer for 2-3 minutes to 425ºF (see notes if your air fryer only goes up to 400ºF.)
  • SEASON: In a bowl, toss the broccoli with oil, umami seasoning, garlic herb, and red pepper flakes.
  • SPREAD: the broccoli out in a single layer over in the bottom of the air fryer basket.
  • ROAST: the florets for 3-4 minutes. Then shake the air fryer basket or flip using a spatula. Continue to air fry for an additional 3-4 minutes or until the florets are roasted and tender. This will depend how large the florets were to begin with. Squeeze some lemon or sprinkle with parmesan if desired, but I don't think it needs it!

Notes

  • Air fryer setting: if your air fryer only goes to 400ºF, simple allow the broccoli to roast for 10-12 minutes, flipping or shaking the basket around the halfway mark.
  • Storing leftovers: Store broccoli in an airtight container for 3-4 days in the fridge. Microwave or reheat in the air fryer! It's delicious cold on salads too!
